National Commodore's message on Sexual Harassment Prevention and Diversity
As members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, we must be always
vigilant to not allow
discrimination of any sort - whether malicious or unintentional - to
undermine our
values.
Neither sexual harassment nor discrimination will be tolerated.
Sexual harassment is one of the most severe forms of disrespect,
displays poor leadership and has no place in our organization. It
degrades productivity and effectiveness, as well as unit cohesion and
readiness. All members of Coast Guard Forces must take prompt and
decisive action to prevent and eliminate sexual harassment within our
service. Similarly, diversity plays a large part in our continuing
missions. It is through the appreciation of each other's strengths that
we will meet the challenges we face in the post 9/11 world.
Organizations that do not recognize, appreciate and celebrate the
variety of their membership will not survive. We must not allow
prejudice and tunnel vision to derail the progress and prestige of the
United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. Therefore, I challenge each member
to investigate ways that we can become stronger through diversity.
Identify stumbling blocks to members meeting their ultimate potential
and eliminate them. Above all, examine your own actions to be sure that
you are truly embracing the concepts of diversity. Do your part to be
sure that acceptance, dignity and respect are driving forces of our
organization.
It is up to each of us to do our part to create an atmosphere of
openness, trust and comfort that allows each of our members to
contribute their interest, skills, capabilities and dedication to serve
in any roll that contributes to our goals and is consistent with our
values of Honor, Respect and Devotion to Duty.
